DVDs are nice and all but there is one problem I found. Over time the data can become corrupt. This can be a problem if the data is irreplacable. I don't care for software backups, but my own data or photos ... its unacceptable - I already lost a whole 4GB of photos when one of my backup DVDs failed. So inorder to protect the data there are several things that can be done:

Multiple copies

The simplest and most obvious is just make two (or more) copies of the DVD. Discs are relatively cheap (even better quality ones) so it doesn't hurt. Keep the copies seperate in different placs.
